For a long, long time, bar soap was the only type of soap. It wasn’t until the 1980’s that liquid soap made its debut into modern society. A few (hundred) handfuls of chemicals and millions of plastic bottles later, bar soap is making a comeback, and its coming back as shampoo bars.

A shampoo bar is exactly as it sounds. A solid form of shampoo. Similar to body soap, but for your hair. Shampoo bars are typically concentrated giving you a good amount of lather with little effort.

Whether you wanna make the switch to clean ingredients or to save a few bucks, here are my top 5 reasons to choose to a shampoo bar.

Clean Ingredients

For starters, shampoo bars tend to be free from harmful ingredients. This article by Genesis College says that shampoo contains toxic ingredients like sulfates, parabens, formaldehyde, and fragrance (and that's not all).

Bar shampoo is often made with nourishing and hydrating natural ingredients such as coconut oil, olive oil, shea butter, and cocoa butter. Created with such common ingredients a lot of people make them themselves.

Save Money

Shampoo bars can also save you money. Did you know bottled shampoo is approximately 80% water? Because the bar version contains almost no water, its packed with concentrated active ingredients allowing you to use less each wash.

Bars Over Bottles reports that a single shampoo bar can last for 60 washes! That means if you wash your hair every other day, one bar could last you 4 months or more! Talk about cost effective.

Eco Friendly

Less water means less carbon emissions and less packaging. A smaller compact size allows for little or even no packaging.

Opting for bar shampoo will lower your carbon footprint. This is because bars last longer, contain minimal ingredients and are overall using less resources says Solidamie.

Great for traveling

Speaking of size, bar soap of any kind is compact making it easier to travel with.

Perfect for all hair types

There are so many options out there when it comes to choosing the right shampoo bar. I will be the first to admit, the first few I tried weren't great for my hair. I felt like I wasn't receiving a good wash because of it. But once I found the correct bar for my hair it was a total game changer.

Just to name a few, there are options for people with color treated hair, dry damaged hair, oily hair, frizzy hair and so on.

Here are some of my favorite brands

Parrotfish Argan Shampoo Bar

  • Perfect for normal to dry hair
  • Strengthens and protects hair from damage
  • Hydrating and gentle

Desesh

  • Crafted in small batches in the USA
  • Designed to replace 2-3 bottles
  • 5% of sales donated to environmental non-profits

J&J Naturals Shampoo and Condition Kit

  • Growth (Peppermint & Rosemary for thicker, healthier hair)
  • Hydrate (Lemongrass & Tea Tree for dry hair and scalp)
  • Strength (Lavender & Rose Geranium for color treated or damaged hair)

Eco Roots Lavender Shampoo Bar

  • Great for all hair types
  • Rich lather
  • Color safe

It's scary to know we aren't protected from chemicals in our every day lives. Especially our beauty products. Switching to a bar shampoo is is a great way to stay protected from those unnecessary chemicals while doing something great for the planet.
