Blue Lizard is a popular sunscreen brand that can be found on the shelves of almost any drug store, but is it safe? With so many chemical-based products on the market today you might be wondering which to buy and which to avoid. Let’s break it down answer the question “Is Blue Lizard Sunscreen Safe?”

To first determine if Blue Lizard Sunscreen is safe we have to identify my definition of safe. This is not a medical claim and should not be taken as medical advice.

Traditionally there are two types of sunscreen, mineral and chemical. I will discuss the two briefly but if you want to read in more detail check out one of these two articles.

Chemical Sunscreen

Chemical Sunscreen which is the newest form of sun protection actually uses synthetic chemicals to penetrate the skin and protect you from the sun.

This type of SPF absorbs the sun’s rays but before it can work, your skin has to fully soak it up… which in my opinion, is a big, fat no no.

I personally have no interest in marinating my body in these harmful substances just for fun. Personally, I try to avoid unnecessary chemicals at all costs.

Mineral Sunscreen

On the other hand, we have mineral sunscreens. Mineral-based sunscreens are crafted using the zinc oxide. Zinc oxide has been used in first aid and the medical setting for hundreds of years.

This white ingredient actually sits on the skin’s surface (without penetrating) to create a barrier to protect you from the sun uvb rays. That is why it’s quite obvious when beach-goers are wearing this type of SPF. While it’s more difficult to rub in, it’s not impossible, and it offers broad spectrum protection.

Is Blue Lizard Sunscreen Safe?

So now that you know about the different types of sunscreen, which type is Blue Lizard Australian Sunscreen?

Blue Lizard is actually a mineral-based sunscreen that uses Zinc Oxide and Titanium Dioxide as its main ingredients. The Environmental Working Group considers the majority of their products a Low Concern or Moderate Hazard.

The Sensitive Mineral Sunscreen, the Baby Mineral Sunscreen stick, and the Kids Mineral Sunscreen stick are all ranked a 2 (Low Concern) on EWG.

Some others include the Sport, Active, and Face Mineral Sunscreen rank as a 3 (or Moderate Hazard) because of one ingredient: Octisalate.

This is an organic compound that helps to absorb the suns harmful UV rays. While it is approved by the EPA for use up to 5% concentration, there could be some negative effects for those with sensitive skin. Topical use could cause rash or irritation, if you are allergic to the ingredient.

While there is not a lot of research done on Octisalate, I cannot speak to the toxicity of it outside of someone having an allergy. You should use your best judgement when selecting the best sunscreen for you and your family.

My response to “is Blue Lizard sunscreen safe?” would be yes, their products run on the safe side especially compared to the many other options you would typically find at any drug store.

If you are still unsure about the mystery ingredient, I still think that Blue Lizard has some really great options free from Octisalate that can reduce your risk of skin cancer.

Below is a list of inactive ingredient list in most Blue Lizard products:

Inactive Ingredient Lists: Alumina, Aluminum Stearate, Beeswax, C 12-15 Alkyl Benzoate, Caprylyl Glycol, Cetyl Dimethicone, Cetyl PEG/PPG-10/1 Dimethicone, Chlorphenesin, Dimethicone, Disodium EDTA, Ethylhexyl Palmitate, Ethylhexyl Stearate, Hexyl Laurate, Hydrogenated Castor Oil, Methyl Glucose Dioleate, Octyldodecyl Neopentanoate, PEG-7 Hydrogenated Castor Oil, Phenoxyethanol, Polyglyceryl-4 Isostearate, Polyhydroxystearic Acid, Propanediol, Purified Water, Sorbitan Oleate, Stearic Acid, Tocopheryl Acetate (Vitamin E), Triethoxycaprylylsilane, Trimethylsiloxysilicate, VP Hexadecene Copolymer

It’s always important to take sun protection measures such as wearing long-sleeved shirts or hats when in direct sunlight for prolonged periods of time. Or reducing sun exposure all together.

Other Non Toxic Sunscreen Options

While I believe Blue Lizard has a great selection of products, I am also biased toward some of the below brands.

Raw Elements (code: EARTHTOPAXTON)

Raw Elements has created a water resistant natural sunscreen that is safe for both you and marine life. The company strives to spread awareness on the importance of protecting our delicate coral reefs. Their commitment to sustainability is what keeps me coming back to this incredible company.

Miami Beach Bum

Miami Beach Bum is one of my new favorites. This spray sunscreen is a broad spectrum SPF value of 50 with no white cast. That’s not even the best part.

This sunscreen is infused with real nourishing ingredients like watermelon, broccoli, algae and aloe. These ingredients are rich in nutrients that prevent hyperpigmentation. They also soothe and restore skin, and improve elasticity.

In my opinion, you are getting skin care as well as sun care, win win.

Solara Suncare

Solara Suncare offers an awesome sunscreen product that contains hydrating and natural ingredients. Made with botanicals and adaptogens this sunscreen rubs in well and absorbs quickly.

Always keep your sunscreen bottles out of direct sun (as well as your sunscreen-free skin) and remember to drink lots of water this summer!
