If you are like me your workout clothing is starting to resemble rags, and it’s probably time for some new ones. Don’t get me wrong, the most sustainable item is the item you already own, but if you ARE ready to replace those old worn out pieces, these brands are for you. Here are my 3 favorite sustainable and eco friendly activewear brands.
Companies Today
Many activewear companies use the, oh so popular, polyester (or plastic) to produce their apparel. Specifically over 90%. They do this because it’s cheap, but also because it makes for good workout gear. It’s lightweight, waterwicking, and breathable. That being said, its far from sustainable.
While the majority of brands are doing this (and wrecking havoc on our natural world), there are a few pretty incredible brands out there that are changing that narrative.
These eco friendly activewear brands are taking it a step further and choosing to REUSE and REPURPOSE plastic that already exists in the world. Whether it’s from plastic bottles or fishing line pollution, these brands have reinvented activewear that is better for the environment and better for you.
Eco Friendly Activewear Brands
PrAna
PrAna is an activewear brand that respects people and the planet. Leading with transparency this company makes strides in changing the way clothing is made.
Sustainable Materials
PrAna began using natural fibers like organic cotton and hemp, then later introduced recycled polyester in 2005. They continued introducing recycled materials in the years following.
They offer a wide variety of workout clothing made from eco-friendly materials. There is something for every activity, whether it’s yoga, climbing, hiking, or just your standard gym attire.
You’d be surprised to know they also have an eco-friendly swim line for both men and women.
For the gals, find the most supportive sports bras, yoga pants, and bralettes and for the guys, high quality performance bottoms, along with many other things.
Environmental Impact
PrAna has a circular system backed by their program “The Renewal System” where damaged or returned inventory is sent back through the workshop to be cleaned, repaired, reinvented, and resold. This is a wonderful way to keep product out of the landfill.
Happy Earth
Happy Earth is a brand taking a stand against the fast fashion industry. They want to make a positive impact on not only Mother Earth herself but the laborers, farmers, and wildlife involved in the production process of creating clothing.
They partner with GOTS (global organic textile standard) certified farms that guarantee their textiles are free from toxic chemicals. Their low impact to the environment is helping to fight climate change.
I love the crop tops that act as a sports bra and a top as well as the yoga pants with pockets!!!
Happy Earth also uses certified Fair Trade factories which are operated under the highest industry standards including ethical labor practices such as the right to work (and leave) on your own accord, safe and hygienic working conditions, discrimination free processes and fair wages.
Sustainable Materials
This organic activewear brand does not believe in using synthetic materials, not even the recycled kind. Instead they choose organic materials like organic cotton for all of their products which requires significantly less water to grow and harvest. This natural fiber is also biodegradable and free from chemical pesticides.
Environmental Impact
Happy Earth’s Sustainability efforts span across their entire supply chain. One highlight is their Climate Neutral Certification which means they offset all emissions that they produce. In order to do that they use renewable energy like solar power and sea shipping which is easier on the environment.
Cotopaxi
Cotopaxi is one of my favorite sustainable clothing brands for many reasons. To begin they have apparel and accessories for all things outdoors. Need a travel bag, duffel bag, day bag, hiking pack or cooler? They have you covered.
Sustainable Materials
The main reason I love this brand so much is because today 96% of their products are made from left over, scrap material other brands throw away. They then recycle (or should I say upcycle) those pieces into durable quality performance products like sustainable workout clothes and hiking gear.
This is also why their products come in the coolest variety of colors. Many of the pieces are completely unique (like a work of art). Want to be surprised? Select the “Surprise Me” option when you purchase a Del Dia Travel Pack and get a totally random color combination. My husband did this for me a few Christmases ago and it was super cool!

Their eco friendly activewear is made from recycled nylon like these Relaxed Fit Women’s Shorts or their comfortable compression shirt. I love how the Bike Shorts are long so they won’t ride up when exercising or playing tennis.

Environmental Impact
This eco friendly activewear brand reduces its carbon footprint by reusing scrap materials instead of raw materials. They will also happily repair or replace any defective or damaged gear as part of their Guaranteed for Good™.
Other sustainable brands that are worth looking into include Iron Roots which is a brand using natural materials like hemp and eucalyptus instead of your standard synthetic fabrics.
Or Girlfriend Collective which has a recycling program to give old clothing a new life (learn more about recycling your old clothing here). I also love that they used low impact dyes to color their workout wear.
If you are looking for eco friendly swimwear, check out my last article. These suits are made for all body types and are upcycled from old fishing nets, recycled beach plastic, and plastic water bottles.
I hope you choose sustainable fashion (like eco friendly activewear) for your next workout. Happy exercising!
