Clean Beauty: Non-Toxic Makeup Brands That’ll Make You Glow

This post contains affiliate links meaning I may earn a commission, at no extra cost to you, if you make a purchase using these links. That being said, I only recommend products I love and trust.

Today there are millions of options when it comes to choosing the best cosmetics for you. But the majority of the products on the market today are not as beautiful as they may look. Makeup can contain harmful chemicals, not FDA approved, that could be affecting your health. Here are 5 non-toxic makeup brands that’ll help you feel confident putting on your makeup.

Conventional Makeup Products

Tara Foley, founder of Follain, says up to 60 percent of what you apply on your skin leaches into your bloodstream. Many makeup brands, as well as other cosmetic products (including sunscreen), contain skin irritants, hormone altering and cancer-causing chemicals says Angela Cabotaje from Right as Rain by UW Medicine.

Synthetic fragrances and synthetic dyes are another cause for concern. They can be harsh on sensitive skin because they are often derived from petroleum. Additionally, synthetic fragrances are officially recognized as endocrine disruptors.

Many but not all endocrine disruptions have been banned in cosmetic products because of their severe risk to our health. Definitely something we don’t want in our daily beauty routines.

Don’t let that scare you (too much), because thankfully for us, there are excellent clean beauty products out there and they just so happen to be earth friendly as well.

Next, I am going to break it down for you. These natural beauty brands have a story to tell – crafted with purpose, passion, and deserve all the praise.

Axiology

About

To start off the list strong, Axiology, a sustainable, vegan lipstick brand. Owner, Ericka, started creating in her kitchen and now sells beautiful shades of lipstick in recycled island trash (I love that!). Her story is so awesome, read here to be inspired.

Axiology Beauty

Products

This woman owned brand has a few different multi-purpose products that can be used for lips, cheeks, or eyes with minimal and natural ingredients. There is so much to highlight about this lipstick, to name a few, the ingredients are earth-derived, fragrant-free, palm-oil free, and absolutely no animal testing (win, win, win!). Loaded with nourishing butters, oils, and antioxidants, one of these sticks can replace a handful of your existing cosmetics.

Packaging

With a mission to keep plastic out of the ocean, these cute little adult makeup crayons are packaged in compostable paper tubes making them 100% zero-waste.

These makeup crayons are an innovative and unique creation. I just love the sustainable packaging.

Axiology Beauty

Products

Full transparency and no hidden ingredients, River Organics takes pride in their 100% vegan makeup brand. Shop their wide variety of products including concealer, blush, highlighters, and my personal favorite, aromatics.

This is the first company I have ever seen with a solid perfume balm. Present day commercial perfumes are typically synthetic fragrance, so it is so inspiring to find an option that is breaking the mold in that category.

A special shout out goes to their imperfects category. They give you the opportunity to buy their products at a discounted price because they are considered to be 'imperfect'. They have small defects or flaws that make the product slightly less attractive while maintaining their quality.

Packaging

River Organics did not cut corners when it comes to their packaging. Their makeup is sustainably encased in a paper tube or jar with sugar cane-based product labels making it fully compostable.

Vyanabeauty

About

This clean beauty brand was rated 2020's Best Sustainable Makeup Brand by the London Runway and for good reason. Found on Etsy, owner Vyana created Vyanabeauty after she struggled to find natural skincare without harmful ingredients. She wanted to create something that she felt comfortable buying.

Product

Vyanabeauty targets the stylish eco-warrior with their healthy all-natural foundation, powders, blush, eye shadow, and more. The ingredients found in her makeup are plant powered and 100% vegan. Her Etsy page provides a thorough description of the ingredients and their benefits to your skin.

Her plant-based ingredients contain no titanium dioxide, parabens and toxic chemicals, dyes and artificial colorants. Leading her business with full transparency, she states the contents of each product with clear ingredient lists.

An amazing side note, this company runs a refill program where they offer refills on all products. Having the opportunity to refill your existing container with a 25% discount is a great way to save money as well as get much more life out of the makeup receptacle.

Packaging

With a shared love for the earth and its people, Vyanabeauty emphasizes its strive to minimizing plastic waste as much as possible. Orders are filled with unbleached, chemical-free boxes and paper that is 100% recyclable and sustainably sourced. The makeup is sold in aluminum jars and they even use compostable ink!

Beautycounter

About

I have highlighted this brand before in my article about non-toxic sunscreen. Not only does Beautycounter have an excellent option for sunscreen, but they also have endless amounts of non-toxic makeup. Their Never List has over 2800 ingredients that will never be found in their products. They have some awesome sustainable practices from their packaging to the responsible material souring that help support a cleaner future.

Product

Beautycounter has a highly rated mascara that doesn't smudge and contains a lash care conditioner for fuller thicker lashes. They also have a brow gel that comes in a few different shades. This gel is loaded with enriching non-toxic ingredients including cocoa seed butter, elderberry extract, and shea butter.

Winning the 2020 Glamour Beauty Award, their Sheer Genius Conditioning Lipstick has a weightless wear and buildable color.

Majority of these products are EWG verified. This is the best ranking a product can receive, which is extremely impressive. While I can't list them all here, I encourage you to check them out yourself. This is a great place to get started transitioning into clean beauty.

Packaging

Beautycounter has a goal to have all product packaging recycled, refillable, reusable, or compostable by 2025. They strive to move to glass and recycled plastic as a more sustainable alternative. This company also started creating products that can be refilled, like their deodorant.

When purchasing cosmetic products for you and your family it's important to research the purest products from brands you trust. The last thing you want is to develop some serious health issues that could be otherwise avoided.

These natural makeup brands have some pretty remarkable stories and their actions that speak volumes on their purpose. I am highly impressed and hope to see more brands out there following in their footsteps.

Final Remarks

If you are lost in the world known as the beauty industry and want to start your journey using the best clean beauty brand like these, here is your sign.
