As I started research for this article, my intention was to find bamboo toothbrushes made in the USA. I quickly found out that the United States doesn’t produce bamboo the way many other countries do. If we do grow it, it’s most often used for decorative fences and landscaping. That being said, regardless if the bamboo is grown in the US, bamboo has so many eco-advantages including sustainable toothbrushes. Here are my favorite sustainable bamboo toothbrush brands!

Plastic Toothbrushes

Today it’s customary to have a plastic toothbrush. In the US, at least. According to the American Dental Association, we discard one billion plastic toothbrushes per year. The sad reality is, these toothbrushes will outlive us by more than 500 years.

Bamboo Toothbrushes

On the other hand, there is a solution that is biodegradable and compostable, I am talking about bamboo.

Bamboo is a renewable resource that grows at immense speeds. Bamboo trees can be harvested and will immediately start to grow back without the need to replant. Because the roots are not being disturbed, neither is the soil.

Environmental Impact

Bamboo could be argued as the most sustainable material to exist. This durable grass has the ability to absorb more carbon dioxide as trees, as much as four times the amount. Choosing bamboo is a great way to reduce your carbon footprint.

Here are my top 4 toothbrushes that are superior to their plastic counterpart.

Sustainable Bamboo Toothbrush Brands

Mia Botanica

Mia Botanica is an eco shop on Etsy that offers a variety of organic products including hair care, skin care, oral care and soaps.

This brand is also featured on my “Best Eco-Friendly Toothpaste” article. This tooth powder is made with natural ingredients and contains contains hydroxyapatite, a fluoride alternative.

Mia’s bamboo toothbrushes are made from natural bamboo and F.S.C. certified. This certification is the highest standard for sustainable tree farming. The soft bristles are infused with high-quality charcoal which is perfect for whitening and sensitive teeth.

KaylaanToothpaste

Kaylaan Toothpaste is also one of my favorite toothpaste brands. They offer a bamboo toothbrush with a twist, it’s electric!

If you have been wanting to switch to an electric toothbrush but have been concerned about sustainability, this toothbrush is for you.

Tips

Tip: to take proper care of your toothbrush, never soak it in water for a long period of time.

Bonus tip: create a travel-sized dental kit and store it in the car for whenever you need it.
