As someone interested in having children one day (and a Type A personality), I have begun researching all the essentials that children require. And of course, my goal is always non-toxic, organic, and safe for my future child. So if you are a parent or planning to be a parent, here are my top choices for the best organic crib sheets.

Today’s Reality of Synthetic Material

You might be wondering why something like sheets should be organic. The real reason is because in society today we are surrounded by synthetic materials (AKA plastic). From our bedding to our clothing, to our shoes, to our furniture, I mean the list goes on and on.

Not to be dramatic but synthetic materials are everywhere. Rayon, polyester, nylon, spandex, fleece are just a few examples. All of which are made entirely of plastic and derived from non-renewable petrochemicals, also known as fossil fuels.

These synthetic materials are chemically produced and the harmful chemicals remain on the fabric even after you purchase it off the shelf.

Conventional Cotton

You might be thinking you are better off with conventional cotton but the truth is, non-organic cotton is loaded with pesticides. In fact, The Organic Trade Association says that up to 25% of total pesticides worldwide are for treating cotton crops. Traditional cotton is also contributing to greenhouse gases, carbon emissions, and pollution.

Choosing organic cotton and other organic fabrics will not only reduce your carbon footprint, but keep you away from unnecessary toxins.

Organic Materials

Organic materials such as organic cotton, hemp, and linen are much safer for your baby’s skin. Today there are certificates that companies can acquire to stand out in the overpopulated market. One of those certifications is called the Global Organic Textile Standard or GOTS for short. Another is OEKO-TEX Standard 100. Both of these companies test fabrics for safety and toxicity.

Now that you know about how completely toxic fabric can be (and how to choose better) here are my favorite organic crib sheets for your newborn baby.
